Javier MarÃas nació en Madrid en 1951. Ha publicado quince novelas, entre las que se encuentran Los enamoramientos y Asà empieza lo malo, asà como tres colecciones de cuentos y varios volúmenes de ensayos. Sus obras han sido traducidas a cuarenta y cuatro lenguas y ha sido galardonado con innumerables premios literarios internacionales, incluÃdo el IMPAC Dublin Literary Award por Corazón tan blanco. Es también un experto traductor del inglés de autores como Joseph Conrad, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Thomas Browne y Lawrence Stern. Ha sido profesor en España, en Estados Unidos y en Gran Bretaña, donde fue profesor visitante de Literatura española en la Universidad de Oxford.

Buena trama, el autor se centra mucho en detalles, personalmente eso se me ha hecho pesado incluso he pasado algunas páginas sin leer porqué eran puras explicaciones que no iban con el diálogo sino con el sentimiento del personaje, claro eso es algo personal, ya que las explicaciones en sà están muy bien hechas.Aún asà el libro me ha gustado, la historia es muy buena.
MarÃas como siempre fantástico, volveré a releerlo con tranquilidad para disfrutar.Mi escritor favorito logra entusiasmarme de nuevo, gracias Don Javier.
He leÃdo algunos libros de este autor y este me continúa buena parte del transcurso de la trama ir metiendome en ella ,acostumbrarme de nuevo a su lenguaje,tal vez me cansa su uso a veces exagerado de sinónimos,para algunas puede encontrar hasta siete,eso revela un vocabulario amplÃsimo del que hace gala repetidas veces.También la ambigüedad de algunos hechos:son y no son,están pero no están,sucedieron o no.Un autor muy inteligente por supuesto,que no facilita su lectura pero finalmente compensa el esfuerzo de leerlo,va atrapando al lector en mi caso. poco a poco y llega un momento en que no lo solté hasta terminarlo,deja un pequeño sabor amargo,tal vez como la vida misma,nada es tan bueno o tan malo y los náufragos de esta historia se aferran a la esperanza de que rescataran algo de sus vidas tan complejas,eso hace que además valga la pena para que uno como lector no quede sumido en la amargura,de que piense que todo sacrificio valió la pena .Estamos vivos y eso importa para ellos en la ficción y para nosotros también.

The shadow world of espionage, in times and situations of apparent peace or actual war, or in more intimate, power-centered insidious daggers drawn of prohibited and valuable information, so comprehensively drawn in his massive trilogy, Your Face Tomorrow, with as well a magical, seductively drawn intuitive mastery that speaks to Marias' underlining at all times the power and supremacy of keen instinct (and with as well, the welcome reappearance in this latest novel of spy-mentor, Bertram Tupra from the trilogy, and Oxford professor and mentor with likely espionage service in WWII, All Souls' Peter Wheeler), Marias' perpetual philosophical discussion as always encompasses questions and colloquys of truth, illusion, morality, reality, loyalty and lies.Your Face Tomorrow showed us the visceral yet rarified choreography of gaining advantage through illicit information or confidence. The husband of Berta Isla, Tomas Nevinson (intrinsically consanguine to Spain and the Crown), sweethearts since middle school, away now at Oxford, is quite talented in his mastery of mimicry, of all possible accents of both English and Spanish. He's actively courted by Peter Wheeler on behalf of some unnamed unacknowledged Secret Service. Tomas turns down the invitation, but soon becomes embroiled in a situation that could prove disastrous through no fault of his own, but without the intercession of his new-found 'friends', might prove definitively and permanently disastrous to him. He signs on, doing what he feels he must do to protect his future.The novel shows us what we have never seen: the domestic consequences of a life of secrecy and deception. It's partially the brilliance of interplay between innermost thoughts by Tomas and Berta that eventuate giving breath, or not, partially the seamless passage of narrative authority to Berta herself, meditative, intuitive, self-aware; as opposed to Tomas' superficial, unexamined talented mimicry at the service of an adopted but imperative Realm.When it comes to contemporaneously questioning Free Will in the 21st Century, I guess I'm compelled to quote, from the inimitable Tupra:"Since when have people chosen their own lives? Over the centuries, with very few exceptions, people's lives have been laid out for them. That was the norm, not a tragedy. most never moved from one place, they died in the place they were born, in the country, in a village or some wretched city, or, later on, in some wretched slum. Families with a lot of children would send one son into the army, another into the Church, if they were lucky and were accepted, because at least, then, they wouldn't starve to death; and they dispatched them very early on too, lost sight of them when they still only beginners, to use your word. If the daughters were pretty, then they'd find them husbands, sometimes and old man and often a tyrant, and if not, they would teach them some vaguely useful secondary skill, like sewing, embroidery, cooking, in the hope that someone would take them into service; or they'd pack them off to a poor girls' convent where they would be unpaid maids...That's how it was for all humanity until very recently indeed, and what we have now is pure illusion...The majority accept their lives and get on with them without asking any questions...Not being able to choose isn't an affront, it's standard practice...Do you think I chose my life...or the Queen for that matter? The Queen had less choice than anyone."
Excellent addition to Javier Marias' oeuvre. Everything one expects: Oxford, spies, secrets, long, tense, lovingly described scenes pregnant with menace. And something one doesn't expect: a principal female character, the wife of a reluctant spy.A few issues: About 2/3 of the book is first-person narrative by the title character, but the other third is omniscient third-person narrative that switches points-of-view. They don't alternate much; there are hundreds of pages of one then hundreds of pages of the other. That's not entirely successful. The main character sometimes feels like a male fantasy. She is decidedly un-liberated, which may be appropriate to her generation (born in the early 50s in Madrid), but sometimes rings not true. And there's a plot twist so glaringly obvious from the outset it hardly qualifies as a twist. It's more like waiting for the gun hung ostentatiously over the mantel in Act I to be discharged later in the play.This won't replace Tu Rostro Manana as the centerpiece of Marias' career, but it's enjoyable and thought-provoking nonetheless.
Este libro tiene una historia interesante y un desarrollo muy bueno. Sin embargo siento que el autor divaga y se extiende en su filosofÃa un poco más de la cuenta. Tiene sus altos y sus bajos. En general, dirÃa que me gustó mucho y que no la olvidaré tan fácilmente por su excelente redacción y su perspectiva única del espionaje y sus consecuencias.Berta Isla es una mujer que desde joven se enamora y escoge a la persona con la que decide pasar el resto de su vida. Este es Thomas Nevison, mitad inglés, mitad español que es reclutado para ser espÃa para el gobierno Ingles. La relación entre ellos, con sus hijos, sus padres y el resto del mundo se nubla por acciones que no pueden relatarse y por consecuencia dudas y resentimientos, ligados por ese amor y fidelidad hasta la edad madura.Historia compleja y que hace reflexionar. Muy bien lograda.
